Blackjack was rescued from the hardscrabble life of a street cat by animal control. He was undernourished and flea-bitten, and nearly the victim of cruel people who tried to hurt him with flying objects. Sometimes cats carry these painful memories even into a safe home life, but Blackjack has turned out to be a mellow and adaptable cat. He does enjoy his food, however, and has filled out quite a bit. He gets along with his fellow housemates, both canine and feline, and never asserts any aggression, even when another kitty tries to take over the food bowl. Blackjack is impervious to the vacuum cleaner, and fascinated by water from the faucet. He enjoys being petted and loves to curl up with his foster mom while she reads or watches television. Blackjack has a silent purr, but you know he's happy by the flexing paws. He is litter box trained, up to date on shots, neutered and FeLV and FIV negative.
UPDATE:
Blackjack was adopted in late December 2012. Unfortunately, he did not work out with the resident cat. The adopter was very disappointed that he had to return Blackjack, as he thought Blackjack was a great cat. We asked him to provide some insight on how better to place him in a forever home. Here is what he said:
"I adopted Blackjack and kept him for about 7 weeks before I thought it was best to return him to PAW. The first thing I will say is that Blackjack is an amazing cat. He is sweet, has a great temperament, loves to chase toys you throw for him and he is delighted to curl up next to you and fall asleep or have his belly rubbed.
"The main reason I adopted Blackjack was to have a companion for the cat that I currently have. After a period of acclimating to each other the two cats got along but they ultimately were not a great fit. Blackjack was at times playful with my cat and they got along but Blackjack had more of a laid back personality than my cat does. My cat might have been a little bit too hyper and wanted to play more than Blackjack did. The other thing is that my cat is very possessive of me. When I get home and settle in he is glued to my side. I found Blackjack to be a very affectionate cat who really enjoyed curling up next to me and being by my side. He could not have been sweeter with me and if he was the only cat that I had I would have kept him without question. Blackjack is not in your face begging for attention but he is the type of cat that loves people and really loves affection. He also really likes to play with toys.
"I would recommend Blackjack as an only cat for someone who is looking for a great companion. I cannot stress enough what a great laid back companion he could be for a person who could give him the love he deserves. I also think that Blackjack would work well with another cat as long as the other cat has a more laid back personality and is not very possessive.
"The last thing I would like to say is that if you are considering Blackjack and you think he would fit in your life, please give it a try. He deserves a great life and is going to be a great companion for someone who is lucky enough to adopt him."
