One cannot look at PRINCESS and not feel empathy for the life she has missed until now. Such a gorgeous and expressive face this girl has. Princess received no applications in the short hold time that she spent at the shelter as an owner give up and truthfully, her stress and anxiety there made her an overlooked prospect for those who came to look for a dog friend. When PAW went to evaluate her she lay in her pen panting, looking well over the 5 years of age she is reported to be. The shelter was under another of their lock down periods, having lost a dog to illness, something that frequently happens in closed shelter environments. During these periods the dogs cannot come out of their pens and so are only spoken to through the bars and moved around only when the caretakers are cleaning their areas. PRINCESS was surrendered to the bulging shelter along with her litter mate; the reason given for their give-up was that they no longer had time for them. Five years in their home, obviously ignored for the last few. Perhaps when they got them they were cute puppies that they just could not live without? Now the two abandoned to live without the only home they knew. Sadly PRINCESS's litter mate did not make it out of there.
It took two people to hoist PRINCESS into the car. Dead weight as if she had given up. By the time she arrived at the vet office, she had brightened, as if years of stress were lifted from her. She seemed to enjoy her exam, her whole body language changed. It appears that Princess and her sibling spent a lot of their last couple of years outside and ignored, despite the glowing review given on their surrender profile. She has lived with young children.
Update August: Princess is a wonderful dog, a very gentle soul. She is not destructive in her foster home and is fine with cats. Her main objective in life right now is to just marvel at the wonders of a home where people care about her. Her hobbies are to lie beside her companions, nap, watch a little T.V. (Animal Planet and commercials are her favorite) and go for walks. Princess would probably do best as an only dog in a single family home where someone is home some during the day.
