Hi Everyone!

IN THIS ISSUE:

Thanks! -- Liz (edietz@bellatlantic.net or 301-464-6413)

PAW volunteer-only website: www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/members.html

WEEKEND SHOW:

**Saturday, July 1st, for DOGS and CATS, at the White Flint Petsmart, from Noon - 3:00 p.m. Please contact Annette (301-585-8262, or amerbrecht@msn.com or aerbrech@wilkesartis.com), as soon as possible if you can attend or transport for the dog show. Please contact Cathy (imhoff@stsci.edu or 301-317-9411) if you plan to attend the cat show, for transporation, cages, vaccinations, etc.

**Schedule notice: The July 2 show at Ellicott City is rescheduled to July 9. Please consider attending White Flint this weekend, and choose between Bowie and Ellicott City next weekend.

URGENT NOTICE/TIME-SENSITIVE ITEMS:

**FOSTERS URGENTLY NEEDED. We need to get Jonny, Moe & Caesar out of boarding. They are big 4-5 month old puppies. Please contact Annette (301-585-8262, or amerbrecht@msn.com or aerbrech@wilkesartis.com) if you can foster any of these pups.

**BAYSOX. HELP NEEDED FOR THURSDAY, June 29th, 5:00 p.m. Come out to the ball park. We are in need of at least 6 additional volunteers who can make it to the Baysox stadium by 5:00. As always, there will be your other fabulous PAW volunteers to work with and we will be making much needed money for the animals. Please contact Brian (bdaugherty@ubmail.ubalt.edu or 410-685-8564) if you can help with this.

**IMOM VOICES OF THE VOICELESS. On Monday, July 3rd, the animal welfare group IMOM is planning a peaceful rally on July 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in protest of puppy mills, pet stores, and insufficient animal cruelty laws. The main event will take place in Washington, DC, and will spread out across the nation to state capitals and pet stores. The DC event is a march at the Upper Senate Park, which is located across from the US Capitol on the Constitution Avenue side. PAW will not be participating as a group, but if you would like to participate as an individual (not as a PAW representative), you are encouraged to do so. In addition, this group can assist anyone who would like to peacefully hand out literature near pet-selling shops. For more information, visit the website: http://www.imom.org/voiceless.

**ANNUAL TAKOMA PARK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE. 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 4th. We need as many PAW volunteers as possible to march together (with our PAW banner, of course)! We would like to bring PAW dogs to march, too, but the dogs' attendance is contingent upon mild weather. Please contact Susan Flashman (301-277-5823) as soon as possible if you plan to attend or would like further information.

**YARD SALE. July 8th. We are planning another sale on July 8, same location in Bowie, as Mary has graciously re-offered her home since it is storing our yardsale items. However, we need more help, especially at setup or cleanup. If we cannot get 6-10 people to commit to setup and cleanup, we will be unable to continue to have these sales, which help to bring in much needed revenue. Please consider marking our monthly yardsales on your calendar to lend a hand. Contact Amy (amy@clark.net or 301-261-7178). Thanks!

**CAR WASH. July 9th. Wash On/ Wax Off -- It's the perfect time for a car wash and we need volunteers to help with our next car wash on July 9th at the Wal Mart in Laurel. We have even added a bonus incentive to attract volunteers. Every volunteer will be entitled to having their own car washed for free! What a deal. This is sure to be a good time and it's a great way to get outside and help raise even more money for the animals. Contact Brian (bdaugherty@ubmail.ubalt.edu or 410-685-8564).

ADDITIONAL FUNDRAISING NEWS:

**HOT LINK. PAW now has the ability to accept credit card donations on line. Through the use of the non-profit group helping.org donors are now able to use their credit card to make a contribution to PAW. Helping.org does not keep any percentage of the money so this is a great opportunity for PAW. If you are interested in making a gift through this web-site and you have any questions, please contact Brian (bdaugherty@ubmail.ubalt.edu or 410-685-8564).

**UNITED WAY/CFC. PAW now has it's United Way/CFC designation number for the 2000 campaign - 9167. We certainly hope you will include PAW if you are making a contribution through either of these programs.

**GRADUATION GIFTS. If you are stumped on what to give that special graduate why not a gift to PAW in honor of the newly matriculated. If fact, this idea works well for anniversary gifts, holiday gifts or even birthdays. Just send us the name of the person to honor and we will send them notification of your gift as well as list them in our newsletter. Of course, the real gift here is helping to save an animal's life.

**CANDY SALES. All of the candy bars have been distributed, and we hope to wrap up the sales soon! Many thanks to our candy-bar salespeople out there! Any follow-up questions should be directed to Chrissie Moore (phone 410-794-4634 or FAX 301-361-7995).

**ORIOLE TICKETS. We have tickets available for the following games. Please contact Brian (bdaugherty@ubmail.ubalt.edu or 410-685-8564) for more info or to get your tickets. GAMES: August 14 -- Chicago White Sox; August 30 -- Detroit Tigers; September 18 -- Oakland A's; September 27 -- Toronto Blue Jays.

**ON-LINE AUCTION. The on-line auction for PAW is back up and running! New items have been added to replace some that we did sell. This is an easy way to find some nice items while helping the animals. Check us out from our homepage or go directly to http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/SALES/auction.html. If you have any questions about the on-line auction, please contact Amy (amy@clark.net or 301-261-7178).

**T-SHIRT SALES. Get your PAW tshirts for summer! We are going to order more PAW Tshirts in purple and white, with our familiar logo -- but there will be a new slogan -- "Adopt for Life!" Please contact Amy (amy@clark.net or 301-261-7178) with your order. Specify color (purple, white, and black if we get enough for this new color) and sizes (adult S M L XL- XX and XXX can be ordered for an extra dollar). White shirts are 13 and the purple and the black are $15. Please order by June 30th.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND THANKS:

**Many thanks go out to all our volunteers. Special thanks to all who transported and showed our PAW dogs and cats for the Greenbelt and Beltsville shows last weekend.

**BAYSOX. I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone that came out Thursday to work the Specialty Beer stand and then our big day Saturday to work the Tail Gate Parties (1,400 people!!) and the Specialty Beer stand. Some of you did double-duty on this long but profitable day. Thanks go out to Lauren Brown, Nancy and Robert Klein, Mary Janicke, Lorna Syme, Valerie Syed, Tracy Goldfarb, Howard Goldfarb, Jennifer Dougherty, Jim Edwards, Joy Sonnier, Rebecca Soubra, Rosemary Watton, Karen Malone, P.J. Boylan, Janet Jacobs, Robin Tierney, Cathy Imhoff, Janet Isman, Rebecca Shea, Leah Cooper, Laurie Cooper, Brian Daugherty, Mary Hart, Shannon Powell, Leslie Gerlich, Marion Hosmer, Allen Hosmer, Marcie Green, Lawrie Rich, Aaron, Adelle Cerrelli, Allan Dansie, Amy Bliech, Maria Ruth, and Liz Dietz. Just want to say, 'We kicked butt!' And I hope those of you who worked the BAYSOX for the first time will join us again. Speaking of which, we have a game Thursday, June 29th. Please see Brian's notice in the Fundraising section, above. Thanks so much, -- Dolly Goldfarb (goldfarb@prodigy.net).

**YARD SALE. Many thanks to Stacey and Kathryn for holding a yard sale for PAW's benefit, June 24-25, in Northwest DC.

**PAW SHAKES NEWSLETTER. Thank you to everyone who sent in articles and photos for the Summer 2000 PAW Shakes, especially those who responded to my plea for more "cat content". I received many wonderful articles and photos. Now I am the process of trying to edit 12 pages down to our limit of 8! I'll have to give priority to the more time-sensitive articles, while saving some items for the fall issue. If you do not see your article or news item in the summer issue, please remind me for the fall issue. I will keep everything on file, but it always helps to get an extra reminder. Thanks again. -- Kathleen (KathSummer@aol.com).

**Thanks to Susan Flashman for bringing a huge outdoor PAW sign to the last couple shows, while we were waiting for the return of the smaller one. Thanks also to Joanne Meikle for taking care of the regular sign and making a special trip to bring it to Greenbelt.

VOLUNTEER ISSUES:

**VIRTUAL ORIENTATION. If you ever wanted to get a PAW "orientation," now you can get all your burning PAW questions answered, in the comfort of your own living room! Using the power of the Internet, we're going to start a question-and-answer system where volunteers can voice whatever questions they have, and then have them answered by various experienced PAW people, which will be posted on a new section of the PAW Web site. We'll post new questions-and-answers on a regular basis, as demand allows. Email your questions to scottnance@aol.com, and look for answers soon!

**MINI-POSTERS AVAILABLE!!! Help us expand PAW's foster network so that more animals can enjoy the benefits of being in a foster home. We have new mini-posters you can put up in your vet's office, at work and other places seen by responsible pet owners. For a poster, which you can also use as a master copy, just contact Robin (rktierney@aol.com or 301-317-5447).

**ANY VOLUNTEERS INTERESTED IN A VIRGINIA SHOW? Moira Gingery would like to see how many volunteers are interested in holding an occasional PAW adoption show in a Virginia Petsmart location. Please contact Moira (mgingery@aol.com or 301-493-8297) if you are interested or have comments. Moira also would like to know which Virginia Petsmart locations work best for you.

**VOLUNTEER DIRECTORY. Liz Dietz mailed out the Volunteer Directory this week and is asking for corrections and other updates from each of our volunteers. If you know of any volunteers who have not received a Volunteer Directory to review, please contact Liz (edietz@bellatlantic.net or 301-464-6413). Please send updates to Liz by July 7th; the revised Volunteer Directory will be distributed to all PAW volunteers shortly thereafter.

OUTREACH:

** FAIR IDEAS? If you know of a community event or fair where PAW should have a table, let us know. Our PAW Fair Folks rock! Contact Robin (rktierney@aol.com or 301-317-5447).

**PAW ON TV!!! Susan Flashman and Richard Bissell have been appearing in segments of the Channel 9 Saturday Morning News Hour to introduce the public to current PAW dogs looking for homes. These segments are shown on the 7-8:00 a.m., Saturday mornings on the Channel 9 News Hour. Richard noted that the segments usually aren't shown until the second half of the show -- from 7:30 onward.

JOURNAL ANIMALS:

This week's Journal cat is Torti (actually Tortilini.) (By the way, I am in desperate need of more cat photos.) Journal dogs are Patches the shepherd mix, Chelsea the chocolate lab, Sheba the malamute (kennelled), and Sadie the terrier mix (kennelled). PLEASE NOTE: THE MONTGOMERY JOURNAL FOR SOME REASON RAN A PHOTO OF STUBBY (Susan Flashman's) INSTEAD OF THE REAL SADIE, IDENTIFYING HER AS SADIE. So we have a photo of the real Sadie in the PG Journal and a Photo of Stubby identified as Sadie in the Montgomery Journal. Should we get any calls, we should probably clarify with the caller which "Sadie" they are interested in. Address questions to Mike Courlander (mcourlander@ussc.gov or 301-340-8672). Thanks -- Mike C.

PRINTER AVAILABLE:

MAC Color Stylewriter 4100 printer; Prints black but NOT color. Original documentation available. Recently services/cleaned, so it will feed paper well. This printer is not to be sold, but rather it is being donated to be used (at least some of the time) for PAW-related work. Contact Kathleen Summers (KathSummer@aol.com) if you would like to use this printer. This item is being donated Bob Summers, Kathleen's brother. Anyone who has additional questions can email Bob (andrea.weisman@maine.edu).

ARE THERE ANY STAMP COLLECTING EXPERTS OUT THERE?

Mary Janicke received a stamp album at the yard sale. Is there someone who knows about stamp collecting and would be willing to take a look at the album and give us an assessment of its value? Please contact Mary (1-800-347-6647, ext.212 or MJanicke@counseling.org). Thanks!

Volunteers are also needed for the day of the event. SIGN UP NOW!!! Longaberger and the other basket collection names are the property of the Longaberger Company. This fundraiser is in no way connected with or sponsored by the Longaberger Company.

DOGS THIS WEEK:

**The Sunday Journal, the weekend edition of the Montgomery, PG, and Fairfax Journals, last Sunday featured the plight of our Woody. It ran two good-sized color photos and focussed on the efforts of Joan Dickie, Chris Lord, and Dr. McMichael in bringing this sweet pup back to health. PLEASE CHECK OUT WOODY'S STORY on his special page on our web site (http://www.paw-rescue.org/DOGS/woody.html).

**A FRIEND FOR CHAD?: Chad is a nice PAW beagle staying at College Park Animal Hosp., who seems a little "shell-shocked" for all the things that have happened to him in his life. He needs a buddy to help draw him out of his shell. Could that be you? We're looking for someone willing to spend some quality time with Chad on a regular basis and give him some extra TLC until he is adopted or goes to a foster home. Interested? Email scottnance@aol.com.

**IN MEMORY OF OUR DEAR ONES. As many of you have heard, our beloved Guiness passed away this weekend, most likely of bloat. There is certainly nothing anyone could have done, but it makes us so sad to think how close he was to finding a real life when he left us. Some of us would like to purchase a plot at Valley Pet Cemetery where a few of us have buried our own pets (and where Becky Soubra is kindly burying our little Mamie, who also died suddenly this week). Since we won't use PAW funds for this since we reserve money to help animals who can use it, I'd like to take up a collection. for $170 plus whatever a stone would cost, 3 of our animals could rest amongst the other pets who were part of families. Since we PAW people consider the animals in our care part of the family, they really deserve no less. Please contact me, (amy@clark.net or 301-261-7178) if you want to help out, and also if you would like to participate in our cemetery visit. Let's all hope that we won't need to use this plot again for a long time. Thank you.

CATS THIS WEEK:

At our show on Sunday at the Beltsville Petco, the cat fosters set a new record. We had 35 cats and kittens present and available for adoption! We also had about 15 PAW cat fosters and volunteers on hand. Thanks to everyone for their efforts. Too bad we outnumbered the applicants! ;)

We are still looking for a foster home for Susie, an adorable friendly young black cat who needs a room of her own. If you can help, please contact Cathy at imhoff@stsci.edu.
