The Prince George's County SPCA Home Page

Welcome to the PGSPCA Home Page! You'll find information about what the PGSPCA is, and how you can help by volunteering. There is also information about pet adoptions through the PGSPCA, and photos and descriptions of some of the animals currently available for adoption. There is also a list of upcoming adoption shows, where you can meet some of the pets in need of a permanent home.

If you have any comments or suggestions about these Web pages, please contact one of the people listed at the bottom of this page, or on the contacts page.

About the PGSPCA

The SPCA of Prince George's County is a non-profit group promoting animal welfare. We are not the county shelter, although we are a recognized rescue group who can remove animals from the shelter and place them into foster homes as they await opportunities to be adopted.

Volunteering

We are looking for volunteers to help with a variety of jobs, including providing foster care and helping out at adoption shows. SPCA foster families take in abandoned dogs and cats who would otherwise be housed at the county animal control facility. They are responsible for providing house room, love and transportation to the vet, as well as any basic training for young pets (litter box, housebreaking). The SPCA pays for food, litter and medical attention. Volunteers are available to help out and provide crates or advice to foster homes, as needed. Foster parents help interview potential owners and make arrangements with people to view the animals, such as bringing them to adoption shows that are held on a regular basis.

Adoption information

Most of our animals are adopted from the applications they receive at shows. These adoptions are subject to approval by completion of veterinary checks for the prospective adoptor as well as a home visit. The current fee for adoption is $125 for dogs, and this includes rabies shots, DHLPP vaccines, worming, heartworm tests, 6 months of heartworm preventative pills and spay/neuter. All our animals must be spayed or neutered - with almost 1000 dogs a month being destroyed at the county shelter, we cannot permit our rescues to contribute to the tragedy of pet overpopulation.

If you are interested in adopting an animal, please respond via email if it is concerning one of the animals listed on-line, or come to one of our advertised shows. We advertise in the Washington Post during the week prior to scheduled adoptions shows, and we do adopt to families out of county as well.

The animals listed on the web pages are only a few of the many animals we have in foster care. There are usually about 50-100 dogs and cats available at any given time. Please do come to one of our adoption shows or get in touch with one of our contact people for more complete information on the animals we have available.
